A half an hour later, we walk into a hole-in-the-wall he’s confident neither Heather, nor anyone he knows, would ever find him in. There is live music, groups of college kids and older people, alike. I gorge myself on nachos, experiencing intense relief and dread, all at once.

When I finish eating, he motions for me to come sit on his lap. We listen to the bluesy song, our eyes on the singer, minds undoubtedly elsewhere.

At one point, he touches my stomach, his eyes drifting to it. The touch is intimate—a hello of sorts, and it’s the first moment tonight that all the worries I have vanish. My arms lace around his neck, and as the artist plays a slower, more somber tune, I lean into him, and our eyes lock.

He runs a hand through my hair, and I can’t help but smile. “What?” he asks.

I touch my forehead to his, close my eyes, and tell the truth. “I think I’m falling in love with you.”

My eyes flick back up to his, and he holds my gaze, but doesn’t respond. Not with words. Instead, he takes my face into his hands and kisses me long and slow.
